The complex is designed to provide, in a controlled manner, useful Fe for iron transport and protein storage in the body (i.e., transferrin and ferritin, respectively). Following IV administration, the polynuclear iron core of the complex is absorbed predominantly by the reticuloendothelial system of the liver, spleen, and bone marrow. In a second phase, iron is either used for the synthesis of Hb, myoglobin, and other iron-containing enzymes, or is stored primarily in the liver as ferritin.
